Truancy is a nation wide problem that has been studied extensively and linked to numerous negative outcomes. The all-important base of a solid education is eroded having a predictable impact on the child’s future. Planed intervention by qualified school administrators, counselors and as a last resort by juvenile court may change the child’s direction towards poverty, crime, substance abuse and depression. These behavioral problems often are followed by progressively more serious adjustment problems in adulthood. Truancy is an early warning sign for future problems and should not be ignored. Underlying reasons behind the child’s behavior need to be investigated and corrective measures taken.
The philosophy that a breakdown in parental supervision has occurred, resulting in truancy and a wide range of unacceptable behaviors is true in many cases as proven in statistics. Holding parents accountable is largely effective helping the child to turn around and become productive.
How is the responsibility of a single parent working in a midlevel position as a rule more than 40 Hours per week plus travel time affected? The workday for a single parent doesn’t end at home. Household chores also have to be done. The probability of a problem child helping is low. Quality time a parent can devote to the child is therefore limited.
Attending counseling sessions, parenting skills classes, and support groups if offered by the school or state are time consuming and often expensive. Taking time off from work can be problematic for the parent as well affecting job performance.
If a parent is unable to motivate the child to attend counseling, in other words the child completely refuses, it is out of the parents hand to correct the situation. The juvenile court may eventually decide to hold the parent accountable regardless and fine the parent between $300 and $500 or possible community service.
Having this Damocles Sword hanging over a single parent is demoralizing adding to frustration, stress and fear of undeserved consequences.
These situations exist and I don’t know of anyone having addressed the single, responsible parent issue.
